Coffee and Conversation: Forest Conservation - Early Days: Sunday, March 17th

Coffee & Conversation: Forestry, Mar 2024

In the early 1950’s the Canadian Forestry Association developed a forest conservation program that visited many parts of the province, including Prince Albert and surrounding communities. The displays and presentations were in a rail car that was supported by the CPR and the CNR. In addition to learning about this pioneering environmental movement, the presentation will highlight how small rural communities depended on the forest for their existence and how much the rural populations have changed in the last seventy years.

John Daisley was born and raised in Prince Albert and is a graduate of PACI and the Renewable Resources Technology program at SIAST in Saskatoon. He spent his career in forestry; first for the Saskatchewan Forest Service, and then for Saskatchewan Forest Products Corporation, MacMillan Bloedel and Weyerhaeuser. He worked around the province, lastly in the Hudson Bay region. John currently runs a hobby sawmill on his woodlot near Hudson Bay. In 2019, John became the first president of the Saskatchewan Forest History Society which fosters and promotes the understanding of the role that forests and forestry played in the development of the province.
